Vintage Disney-like shooter Mouse P.I. For Hire has sold so well its publisher has made all invested money back

Less than one month since its debut, quirky black-and-white vintage Disney-styled shooter Mouse P.I. for Hire has been a big success, selling nearly three quarters of a million copies and recouping the money it spent on the game.

Mouse: P.I. For Hire is developer Fumi Games’ debut offering, and after a small delay, it was released in April to a positive reception from players and critics. In the time since, the game has done commercially well, with publisher PlaySide announcing Mouse P.I. for Hire has sold roughly 730k copies since release.

That sales figure is across all platforms – PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and Steam – though PlaySide notes that 50 percent of sales were on consoles, as “the title retains significant visibility on console storefronts”.

In terms of money, PlaySide said Mouse P.I. for Hire has made an estimated $21.4m since its launch in April. This has meant PlaySide has recouped all milestone payment, publishing and marketing costs.

Renowned actor Troy Baker – known for the likes of The Last of Us and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – stars as the cigar-munching Jack Pepper in Mouse: P.I. For Hire, and his trigger-happy antics are accompanied by a swinging orchestral score and lively cartoon animation.

We were rather taken with Mouse P.I. for Hire on its release, awarding it four stars. “Part chaotic retro shooter, part stylish cartoon noir, Mouse P.I. for Hire goes beyond its stellar artistry to deliver an invigorating, imaginative hard-boiled romp,” our Matt wrote in Eurogamer’s Mouse P.I. for Hire review.
