“Don’t over-expect or hype it” – Resident Evil Requiem will feature characters from previous games, producer teases, but won’t say who

Resident Evil Requiem will feature characters from previous games in the series, the game’s producer has confirmed, but he won’t confirm who.

Capcom’s forthcoming ninth mainline game in the series stars Grace Ashcroft as the protagonist, daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft who features in spin-off Resident Evil Outbreak.

As such, Well Played asked producer Masato Kumazawa if other characters from Outbreak will make an appearance.

“I would say that yes, there are going to be some characters from the past series to come in, but don’t over-expect or hype it,” said Kumazawa.

“We can’t promise you anything about that, but the only thing I can say is that there will be characters that have been involved in the Raccoon City incident involved in the game.”

Of course, the subtext of this line of questioning was probably to uncover further if fan-favourite Leon Kennedy will feature in the game. Rumours have been swirling that the Resident Evil 2 and 4 protagonist will be included somewhere in Requiem.

Yet back in June, Requiem’s director Koshi Nakanishi stated Leon isn’t the sort of person to “jump at something like a bucket falling”, which is why he’s “actually quite a bad match for horror”.

Instead, Grace was chosen as a “relatable” protagonist more suited to the genre.

Still, no doubt Kumazawa’s comment will get tongues waggling. Leon, as well as Claire Redfield, would certainly fit the bill as being “involved in the Raccoon City incident”, but they would certainly warrant more hype than Kumazawa is teasing.

Perhaps more likely will be one of the other playable characters from Outbreak besides Alyssa, such as Kevin Ryman or Yoko Suzuki.

In another interview recently, Kumazawa confirmed Resident Evil Requiem won’t be getting a public demo, unlike other recent series entries.

Further, prior knowledge of Resident Evil Outbreak won’t be required – so even if previous characters do reappear, they should be well-integrated into the story.
