London’s calling, with first footage of Sigourney Weaver on set as Tomb Raider’s Evelyn Wallis

Filming for Amazon’s Tomb Raider series is currently underway in the UK.

Over the weekend, footage of Alien and Avatar actress Sigourney Weaver on location in London started making the rounds. Now, I will be the first to admit this new footage doesn’t tell us a great deal, with the images and videos circulating merely showing Weaver standing on the roadside in the Big Smoke, but as a massive Tomb Raider fan, I am excited nonetheless.

Weaver will play Evelyn Wallis in the Tomb Raider series, with her character described as “a mysterious, high-flying woman who is keen to exploit Lara’s talents”. Even from just the short clip of the actress on set, which you can see below, Weaver is definitely giving off villain vibes. There is something about the sharp collar and business attire that screams ‘I am scheming’.

For those who have seen the Tomb Raider film with Alica Vikander from 2018, I am getting the same vibe from Weaver’s character as that of Kristin Scott Thomas’ Anna. You can see how Weaver looks as Evelyn Wallis below.

As well as Weaver, other confirmed cast members include Jason Isaacs as Lara’s Uncle Atlas, Martin Bobb-Semple as Zip, Bill Paterson as Winston and Celia Imrie as Francine (that is to say, the Head of Advancement at the British Museum, who is “focused solely on raising funds and glasses of champagne”).

Meanwhile, Sophie Turner will play Lara Croft. Earlier this year, we got a look at Turner’s Lara, with her ensemble from the classic Tomb Raider games from the 90s serving as inspiration. More recently, the actress has said her take on Lara will be “so unashamedly capable”.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge – who along with Fleabag is also known for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Killing Eve and Crashing – will serve as the show’s creator, writer, executive producer and co-showrunner. Jonathan Van Tulleken will be director and executive producer, along with Chad Hodge as co-showrunner and executive producer. We don’t have a release date for the show yet.
