Star Wars Zero Company finds success in passing 1m sales, so can the furloughed development team be reinstated and paid now?

Star Wars Zero Company, the XCOM-like turn-based tactics game from Bit Reactor, appears to have been a success, selling more than 1m copies, according to estimates from industry analyst Alinea Analytics.

It’s a notable achievement for Star Wars Zero Company, but the sales milestone is especially pertinent against the backdrop of “most” of Bit Reactor’s development team being furloughed without pay before the game’s release. This was reportedly a consequence of a dispute between the studio’s owners, as well as a lack of funds, so it raises the question now of whether the team will be reinstated and paid using revenue generated by sales of the game.

Star Wars Zero Company’s most successful platform has been Steam, with a dominating 69.9 percent of copies sold, followed by 19.9 percent on PlayStation and 10.2 percent on Xbox – including copies sold through Xbox on PC.

Alinea’s Rhys Elliott estimated that Zero Company made about $50m (~£37m) in revenue since it launched on 27th August, which he said is “respectable for this genre and during such a crowded period (even with the Star Wars brand attached)”.

Incidentally, while Zero Company sold fewer copies on console, it made more money per person there, simply because, as Elliott noted: “Console players pay more per copy.”

The overwhelming majority of Zero Company’s audience – 90 percent – is split between North America and Europe, with only five percent in Asia, according to Alinea’s breakdown. Perhaps that’s a reflection of Star Wars’ own popularity in the world. Zero Company’s success also puts it in the top-five-earning games of 2026 based on a major intellectual property (IP). The biggest earning, by some margin, is James Bond game 007 First Light, with $309.8m (~£233m). Zero Company is only the latest of recently-released games to cross the million sales milestone. The Blood of Dawnwalker and Onimusha: Way of the Sword were both released around the same time and have each sold over a million copies.

We haven’t reviewed Star Wars Zero Company yet, but are working on it. However, Christian Donlan wrote enthusiastically about the game after a few hours with it, saying: “Star Wars Zero Company understands that Star Wars games should feel less like the movies and more like the toys.”
