Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell remake gets another new game director, but it’s the original director returning

Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell remake has landed itself a new game director, and it’s a name you may recognise.

David Grivel – who left the studio and therefore the Splinter Cell remake back in 2022, to set off for a “new adventure” – has rejoined the project once again.

Sharing the news on his LinkedIn, Grivel wrote: “I am very, VERY happy to announce that I’m rejoining Ubisoft Toronto as Game Director on the Splinter Cell Remake!”

The developer added this was a “very special team and project” to him, with an accompanying pink love heart emoji.

During his initial stint at Ubisoft, Grivel worked on the likes of Far Cry and the Assassin’s Creed series. Following his departure from the company three years ago, Grivel then moved to EA’s Ridgeline Games to work on Battlefield 6. However, Ridgeline was subsequently shut down in 2024.

As for the Splinter Cell remake, well we still haven’t seen a huge amount of the upcoming game. Ubisoft announced its plans to remake Splinter Cell in December 2021. At this time, the company said this game is being built “from the ground up” with updated visuals and improved design elements to “match player comfort and expectations”. In addition to this, Ubisoft confirmed the game will be linear, and won’t feature any open world gameplay, much like the originals.

In the time since, a job listing revealed Ubisoft is updating its story for a “modern-day audience”, and that it hopes to bring in new fans to the franchise with this remake. In 2022, the studio then revealed some concept art for its upcoming – but still “very early” in development – Splinter Cell remake.

Perhaps now Grivel is back on the job once more, we will get a fresh Splinter Cell remake update soon? Stay tuned.
