Xbox Mythic Achievements roll out to Insiders and are retroactively awarded as far back as Xbox 360 games

The rumoured Xbox Mythic Achievements – the equivalent of PlayStation’s Platinum Trophies – have been officially announced, and they’re rolling out for Xbox Insiders now.

Microsoft announced Mythic Achievements yesterday evening and, as expected, they’re awarded when you earn all the other Achievements for a game – exactly the requirements needed to earn a Platinum Trophy on PlayStation.

Mythics are not affected by Achievement-adding DLC (Achievements added after a game’s release are labelled as “add-on” Achievements) and perhaps most importantly, they’re awarded retroactively, as far back as for Xbox 360 games. That means you could have a fat pile of Mythics as soon as they’re turned on, providing you’ve actually Achievement-completed lots of games, that is.

Mythics arrive as part of an Achievement tidy-up on Xbox, which brings with it a new Gaming tab for profiles that organises Achievement-hunting progress better. You can also browse friends’ Gaming tabs if you’re hoping to feel superior to them.

There’s no word on a date for a full roll-out for Mythic Achievements, but you can join the Xbox Insider Program by downloading the Xbox Insider Hub for Xbox Series S/X and Xbox One, and for PC.

Mythics follow a string of incremental Xbox updates from this year – such as some slight rebranding and a player feedback forum – that have had to contend with what’s been an otherwise incredibly turbulent year for Microsoft’s gaming division. It started with longtime leader Phil Spencer leaving Xbox early in the year, and was followed by sweeping layoffs and restructuring as new leader Asha Sharma took over and sought to make business sense of what she inherited.

The most recent wave of Xbox restructuring occurred last week, with a further 268 layoffs, studio consolidation, and what looks to be the impending closure of Hellblade developer Ninja Theory.
