Yet another Sonic the Hedgehog film is in the works, as the Sonic boom continues

Paramount has another Sonic the Hedgehog film planned, seemingly a spin-off from the main series.

Currently untitled, a Sonic Universe Event Film is planned for release on 22nd December 2028 (thanks Variety). That’s over a year after the already-announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is planned for 19th March 2027.

Nothing else is known about the project at this time, including which character(s) it will star. Is a Shadow the Hedgehog solo film with Keanu Reeves too much to ask?

The first three films in the series have collectively surpassed $1bn at the worldwide box office, with each entry becoming steadily more popular than the last.

It’s no wonder, then, that a fourth film has already been greenlit, as well as this newly announced spin-off to expand the franchise further.

It will also follow the Knuckles TV show spin-off, also from Paramount. It set a streaming record for Paramount+ on its opening weekend, with over 4m hours streamed. Yet it’s hardly the most popular streaming platform and the series itself proved forgettable.

Last year, Sonic franchise producer Toby Ascher described the main films as “Avengers-level events”. He continued: “They’re going to be these big, exciting stories that have a lot of different characters. And so what television did for us is it gave us time to go into some of the more supporting characters in depth and really build them out in cool ways.”

It’s unclear if future TV shows have been scrapped in favour of a feature-length film instead, considering no further shows have been announced following Knuckles.

And if the Sonic Universe Event Film comes after Sonic the Hedgehog 4, will it continue that story or focus on a newly-introduced character?

We don’t yet know who will be featured in the next mainline film, but we’ve already speculated based on the third film’s post-credit scene. Who are you hoping will appear?
