Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft is the best-selling video game heroine, Guinness World Records proclaims

Tomb Raider’s globe-trotting Lara Croft has earned herself two world records to pop up alongside her various artifacts and dinosaur skeletons at the family manor.

As shared by the Guinness World Records, Lara now holds the title of the best-selling video game heroine, along with the record for a video game character gracing the most magazine covers. These magazines include the likes of Newsweek, Time and The Face.

Lara has been a magazine cover girl 2300 times, as of April this year. Meanwhile, the Tomb Raider series has sold over 100m copies since the first entry was released back in 1996. According to Guinness World Records, this puts Lara “way out ahead” of her competition.

Scott Amos, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics said: “As tremendous fans of Lara Croft, we’ve been so fortunate to join the Tomb Raider community on this journey throughout the years. She’s been aspirational and inspirational for nearly three decades, and it’s an honour to have her legacy recognised by Guinness World Records.

“These achievements remind us of her enduring cultural impact and the passionate global fanbase. We’re thrilled to be building a bright future for Lara Croft driven by her spirit of curiosity, courage, and adventure.”

Meanwhile, Guinness World Records editor Alice Bell called Lara a “true gaming icon”, and her ongoing record breaking legacy “shows what an inspirational character” she is.

“Long may Lara’s adventurous spirit reign! We’ll see what new standards she can set into the future!”

The latest mainline entry in the series was Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which came out in 2018. Crystal Dynamics is currently working on the next game alongside Amazon.

If you can’t wait until then, Netflix has a Tomb Raider anime on the service. Its second season is set to air this December. A separate series is also heading to Amazon Prime, with Sophie Turner taking on the role of Lara Croft.
