Resident Evil 2 Director Hideki Kamiya Calls for a ‘Non-Scary Mode’ So He Can Enjoy Requiem’s Puzzles and Combat Without the ‘Scary Stuff’

Hideki Kamiya, the legendary director behind fan-favorite games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, is calling for a “non-scary mode” for Resident Evil Requiem.

The director — who also directed the original Resident Evil 2, by the way! — has been filmed talking to his team as they watch a colleague spend a little quality time with Leon S. Kennedy in the latest Resident Evil game.

In the brief video uploaded to his new studio’s Twitter/X account, we see a dev playing Requiem, surrounded by colleagues, including Kamiya. “I’ve been saying for forever, they should make a ‘non-scary’ mode,” Kamiya says, to which someone replies: “That would completely defeat the concept of the game, though…”

“Look, I just want to enjoy the puzzles!” he added. “The puzzles and the combat. I don’t need the scary stuff…”

It was, in fact, Kamiya’s Resident Evil 2 that gave us rookie cop Leon in the first place; the fictional cop was just 21 years old when the events of the second game took place. Now, 28 years later, Leon is back, and both he and Kamiya are in their fifties now.

Which is why it’s particularly amusing to hear Kamiya say: “Leon’s no spring chicken anymore, is he?” When the room burst into laughter, he laughed with them, admitting, “Guess that goes for both of us. People who live in glass houses…”

Yesterday, Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed plans to launch a major story expansion for the game, following other additions planned over the coming months. In a video message to fans posted on social media this week, Nakanishi once again thanked players for Requiem’s huge success so far, which has resulted in 5 million copies already sold as of last week and stock issues for physical copies.

But Capcom now has much more in store for the game, too — including that story expansion, the addition of a “mini game” in May, and the upcoming arrival of a photo mode.

If you’re still negotating Requiem’s scarier moments, IGN’s Resident Evil: Requiem guide will help you every step of the way through RE9. Take note of these key tips and tricks before you get started, and focus on finding these important items early. Plus, our comprehensive walkthrough will make sure you don’t miss a single Bobblehead or file as you try to survive from the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center all the way to Raccoon City.
