Helldivers 2 sets ‘Uncover the Truth’ update, making the Illuminate scarier and kickstarting a new galaxy-shaking mystery

There may be other online shooters taking the limelight away fromHelldivers 2 (here’s looking at you, Arc Raiders and Marathon), but that doesn’t mean Arrowhead Game Stuidos’ breakout hit has gone anywhere – especially with a live-action movie coming up. With a perfectly stabilized player base and install size woes dealt with, Arrowhead is ramping up the content output again, and the next major update looks like a doozy.

‘Uncover the Truth’ seems to be the title of the next content drop, which is set to arrive later this week, on 20th March. There’s even an old-fashioned trailer to go with it:

Arrowhead knows how to tease.Watch on YouTube

“Nothing could possibly go wrong,” the video description cheekily teases. Judging by the trailer and previous social media posts, the enigmatic Illuminate are up to no good again, and the planet Seasse, “deep in Illuminate territory,” might hold the answers to strange gravitational waves that “defy sanctioned scientific models.” Weather on the planetary surface is behaving a bit strange too, so the Illuminate might be the least of our worries.

The stylish trailer amps up the importance of these new “shocking developments” and points to weird structures and devices which certainly are being used against Super Earth one way or another. Helldivers just have to find out what they do (and how to stop them). As always, expect the unexpected when it comes to the game’s live narrative and its major in-game events and missions. This is what makes Helldivers special and so appealing, and at the very least, I’m tempted to log into the game this weekend and experience a bit of this for myself.

No matter where Helldivers 2 goes next, it remains Sony’s biggest live-service success so far, one so huge it ended up being released on Xbox Series X/S last summer too. Now, it’s Bungie who might have something special brewing with Marathon, but those player numbers, at least on PC, probably aren’t as high as the powers that be hoped for.
