The long-in-the-works Final Fantasy 9 animated series is back in production, and it seems to be focusing on black mages

Rumours and official news of an animated Final Fantasy 9 series have been a thing for years now, but the project simply vanished at some point, with rumblings pointing to it being binned altogether. In late 2025, new information suggested it was back on track. Now, its comeback has been officially confirmed.

RPG Site reported on the new findings on 18th March; they come straight from EuroVisual’s (the new production studio) website. Its tentative title is Final Fantasy: Black Mages Legacy. Season 1 will be 10 episodes long, with each one targeting around 22 minutes of runtime.

Here’s the official description of the show: “Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala and Doc, children of the hero Bibi, are the last dark mages of the four continents. Today, they live happily in the city of ALEXANDRIA, guarded by its inhabitants who are rather friendly, although sometimes very curious. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not meant to last… One day, Koln discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, in the inn where he works. Could it be the tragic legacy of their father catching up with them?”

As pointed out by RPG Site, no release date (or window) has been established, but the previous reports talked of a potential 2028 arrival. Considering it’s now deep in production, that sounds like a reasonable prediction. Let’s just hope this new iteration of the show makes it to the finish line. The article reminds those unfamiliar with its troubled creative process the series “began life at a different studio that ultimately went into liquidation.”

By all accounts, Black Mages Legacy sounds like pseudo-sequel of sorts, so this makes us wonder whether the original plan was to release it alongside the long-rumoured FF9 remake. It’s unclear if that project is in active development, but I personally wouldn’t rule out anything, especially after today’s news.
