The upcoming Minecraft Movie sequel has added another A-lister to its cast.
As reported by Deadline, Kirsten Dunst will be joining Jack Black’s Steve when filming begins, with the Spider-Man and Wimbledon actress set to play Alex. Alex is one of the nine default player skins in Minecraft, and is often shown alongside Steve in promotional artwork and such.
Dunst recently joked about about wanting to star in the Minecraft sequel not just because her kids loved the first one, but because she’d like to “make a movie where I don’t lose money”.

It has long been expected that Alex would play a key part in the untitled Minecraft Movie sequel, having cameoed in the first film’s post credits scene. We didn’t see Alex’s face at this time, however she introduced herself to Black’s Steve after the end of the film.
Dunst’s other film credits include Marie Antoinette, Interview with the Vampire and The Virgin Suicides, to name just a few. She has also starred in several TV shows, such as Fargo and Drunk History.
Along with Dunst and Black, the Minecraft Movie sequel will also see returning cast members including Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry and Jennifer Coolidge. Jared Hess is also returning to direct the sequel.
The first Minecraft Movie debuted last April, and was a bumper success, generating $301m worldwide on its first weekend alone. It also sparked a viral trend which saw some viewers going feral, screaming out loud mid-film while launching their popcorn into the air when Black’s Steve shouts “chicken jockey”, as Momoa’s Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison gets ready to fight a baby zombie riding on the back of a chicken.
Along with cinemas playing a polite reminder that people need to be considerate of others around them, Black himself popped up at one screening, asking that viewers don’t behave like animals when watching the film.
