Surprise! Minecraft Dungeons 2 is coming to PC via Xbox and Steam, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and Xbox Series and Game Pass later this year.
The announcement – prematurely leaked by a Gematsu social media post earlier today – accidentally confirmed publisher Xbox Game Studios and developers Mojang Studios and Double Eleven were working on Minecraft Dungeons 2 ahead of the formal announcement at Minecraft Live.

“It’s not often that we get to announce an entirely new game, but here we go: Minecraft Dungeons II is coming this year!” a formal press release declared. “This is an all-new action-RPG adventure where you’ll take on high-stakes encounters, thrilling challenges, and explore never-before-seen locations in the Minecraft universe. Of course, there will also be loot! Loads of it. Grab it all, or share with up to three friends as you co-operate to save a world in crisis.”
And though “it might seem obvious”, Mojang stressed that yes, “Minecraft Dungeons 2 is the sequel to Minecraft Dungeons”, adding: “There’s never been a better time to catch up if you’re late to the party. We’ll share more news soon!”
It shouldn’t be that much of a surprise. 2020’s dungeon crawler was a huge hit, clocking up over 10 million players by February 2021, and 25 million players by April 2024, making it the most successful Minecraft spin-off yet. The original game, of course, is the second-biggest selling game of all-time, out-selling Grand Theft Auto 5 and Wii Sports with 350 million sales. Only Tetris has sold more.
We thought the first Minecraft Dungeons was “promising” when it released back in 2020, suggesting it “rounds out a strong extension to the franchise, and by far the most promising Minecraft spin-off released to date”.
