Sony takes its cancelling spree to another level by canning its PlayStation Remote Play-enabled car, Afeela 1

Turns out it is not just studios and live-service projects which are party to Sony’s cancellation spree, as last night, it was announced that the PlayStation Remote Play-enabled car known as Afeela 1 has also been nixed.

The Afeela 1 was a joint venture between Sony and Honda, and would have allowed passengers to stream their PS4 and PS5 games on the go providing they had a console back at home. It was to be the first car from the joint venture known as Sony Honda Mobility, which was established in 2022 to produce electric vehicles (EVs).

But, after some consideration, it appears that the two companies are not Afeela-ing too good about the car’s future, and so have ultimately decided to pull the plug on it (see what I did there).

“As a result of Honda’s reassessment of its automobile electrification strategy announced on March 12, 2026 and factoring the changes to the EV market, the underlying assumptions of [Sony Honda Mobility’s] business operations such as the utilisation of certain technologies and assets planned to be provided by Honda were fundamentally altered, resulting in the announcement by [Sony Honda Mobility] today to discontinue the development and launch of its first model, Afeela 1, and its second model,” a joint blog post on the Honda newsroom reads.

This latest update on Afeela 1 doesn’t mean it’s the end of Sony Honda Mobility, though. Sony and Honda will continue to discuss future business plans, the companies have said, and will “[take] into account the initial purpose of the JV establishment as well as the latest EV market environment”. So, stay tuned for more at some point down the road.

The Afeela 1 wasn’t the first time we’ve seen the idea of in-vehicle gaming floated about. Back in 2022, BMW announced it would begin offering casual gaming in its cars, controlled using smartphones. That same year, Tesla announced in-vehicle Steam integration, but 18 months later this idea was dropped.
