The Super Mario Galaxy Movie adds Fox McCloud from Star Fox, and it really feels like we’re being set up for a Super Smash Bros. film

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s marketing campaign has been aggressive to the point of spoiling several shocking cameos in recent weeks, even if its trailers aren’t the most informative when it comes to plot. Maybe that’s because there’s a bigger emphasis on fan-favourite characters and references than having an actual story with a hook – but hey, fans seem to be loving this.

After having a key character beat probably spoiled by a rating board, we’re now learning Fox McCloud from Star Fox is in the movie, though the announcement comes straight from Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo:

What the addition of the furry legend to the gargantuan animated flick entails is unknown, and hopefully it’ll remain that way, as we definitely know way too much about this one less than a week away from release. As a reminder, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens 1st April in most territories.

The other big question is who’s voicing McCloud, but if you ask me, nothing will be funnier than the reveal of Donald Glover voicing Yoshi (which wasn’t as funny as “Chris Pratt is Mario”, but you just can’t chase that high). The movie packs has an all-star cast which also includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Brie Larson, Benny Safdie, Charlie Day, and Keegan-Michael Key, among others.

At this point, we also have to start seriously wondering if Nintendo is gauging interest for an actual Super Smash Bros. event movie. Looking at the first Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.3 billion haul in theatres alone plus the glowing tracking for Galaxy, such a bet would probably pay off big time, and this cosmic adventure might be the perfect opportunity to set up an even bigger crossover.

What about a new Star Fox game though? Please, Nintendo?
