After an early 2023 reveal, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam – the next entry in the long-running puzzle adventure series – hasn’t been making much noise. Today’s Level-5 showcase event has changed that with a new in-depth look at the game.
But the juiciest bits of information come from an accompanying press release. First: the game is on its way to release later in 2026. And second: many players will be happy to learn Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will also launch on PS5 and PC (Steam), alongside the previously revealed Nintendo Switch 1 & 2 versions.
The shift to multiplatform doesn’t exactly come as a shock after Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time delivered a huge win for Level-5 last year, with more than 1.5m sales across PC, PS4/5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 1/2. Also, the Professor Layton games are traditionally associated with Nintendo’s handhelds and mobile phones, so PlayStation and PC versions an exciting development.
Key features in New World of Steam include puzzle design by the riddles and quizzes experts of QuizKnock, a full world map, updated movement, “puzzles that help the town grow”, new companions, full 3D cutscenes, Switch 2 mouse support, and a “coin radar” mode. The new setting is Steam Bison, a town in America powered by revolutionary steam technology that rivals the development seen in London. There, Layton and Luke team up one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.
Level-5 also confirmed language support has been expanded, with English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese available at launch. No word yet on a possible English dub, but the Japanese voice cast was revealed today too.
