Assassin’s Creed Hexe loses another game director, and it’s the second one this year

Assassin’s Creed Hexe game director Benoit Richer has announced his departure from the project, making him the second director-level member to leave the game’s development team this year.

As spotted by Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Richer announced that he had left Ubisoft to join Quebec-based indie studio Servo Games, where he will serve as co-founder and game director alongside other Ubisoft veterans Luc Tremblay, Danny Marcoux and Alex Droun

“This is the beginning of a new chapter,” the now-former Assassin’s Creed Hexe developer said. “Proud to contribute to the Quebec creative ecosystem and help it grow.” Richer did not go into detail about his new project, though promised more details to come.

Richer’s departure from Assassin’s Creed Hexe comes just two months after it was revealed that creative director Clint Hocking was also leaving the project. “We sincerely thank [Clint] for his vision, creative contributions, and dedication over the years, and we wish him the very best in his next chapter,” an Ubisoft spokesperson said in February, before assuring that work on Assassin’s Creed Hexe “continues with a seasoned team” of developers. “The game will deliver something distinctive within the Assassin’s Creed franchise. We look forward to sharing more information in the future,” Ubisoft said.

Jean Guesdon – head of content for the Assassin’s Creed brand – was subsequently appointed the project’s new creative director, and has reportedly since gotten “rid of everything that was ‘magical’ in Hexe”. According to internet tipster @xj0nathan, “we were supposed to control a cat” in Hexe, but “ultimately that’s been cancelled” since Guesdon has come on board.

But, Richer and Hocking are not the only two developers to leave Assassin’s Creed Hexe. Back in October, former franchise lead Marc-Alexis Côté also left the project and Ubisoft. Côté went on to state he “did not walk away” from the company, but was asked to “step aside” by Ubisoft. In January, it was reported Côté was suing Ubisoft following his departure from the company.

As for Hexe, well, this particular Assassin’s Creed project still remains largely a mystery. In 2022 when the project was first announced, it looked to be inspired by European witchcraft. We don’t yet have a release date for the game.

But, while we may have a while to wait for Hexe, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is getting a remake, which after months of leaks is finally releasing on 9th July. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resyned, as this remake is known, is set for PS5, Xbox Series XS, and PC.
