A release date for body cam FPS Better Than Dead has been announced, as well as a new gameplay trailer packed with Hong Kong cinema-style action.
The game, developed by Monte Gallo, will release on the 12th May on Steam. This will be an Early Access release, with a note on the Steam page saying the developer will “improve and expand it with player feedback”.
The game is planned to stay in this Early Access state for six-12 months. When it eventually leaves Early Access, it will have a more “hardcore” mode called ‘For Heaven’. The game will also receive some additional levels, and the game’s “true ending” as the full launch hits. The Early Access release will have a “full campaign” however, so if this seems like your type of thing, you should be able to get a substantial package next month.
First announced last year, Better Than Dead is a photo-realistic shooter in a small-but-growing bodycam subgenre of FPS games. Better Than Dead’s peers include Bodycam, which popularised the new style of shooter thanks to a viral gameplay trailer.
Better Than Dead looks to be a gritty shooter in the same vein to Bodycam, however the upcoming title is set apart thanks to its classic Hong Kong action thriller theming, taking inspiration from directors like John Wu and Yuen Woo-ping.
A press release describes the game as a title “built around immediacy and tension” which strips away excess to focus on what matters: movement, reaction, and execution. It continues: “Encounters are short, unforgiving, and decisive. Mistakes are costly. Success is earned.”
