Marvel’s Wolverine Does Not Have a Collector’s Edition, Prompting Fan Questions

If you were expecting a flashy collector’s edition for Marvel’s Wolverine, don’t hold your breath. Following Wolverine’s explosive gameplay reveal at the PlayStation State of Play showcase, Insomniac Games confirmed that the game will not be getting any kind of collector’s edition. Instead, players will be able to choose from the standard edition and a digital deluxe edition, which includes in-game items.

That means there won’t be a version of the game with cool physical goodies like a steelbook, statue, or art book. Insomniac Games didn’t clarify why there won’t be one, as it’s pretty standard for major PlayStation first-party games to have a big collector’s editions.

Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei both had expensive special editions last year with physical items, and Insomniac has a notable history with these as well. Marvel’s Spider-Man 1 and 2 both had collector’s editions with statues, with the latter game being rather infamous for its 19-inch Venom statue. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales didn’t have one, but that may have also been a result of COVID hindering the ability to mass-produce items and ship them out.

Fans are naturally pretty disappointed, as it would be cool to have a mini-Wolverine striking a cool pose. Some said it could be a bad sign for the future of physical media. “Probably not a great sign for physical media honestly. At least they’re releasing a standard edition, I guess,” said one Reddit user.

“Disappointing,” remarked another. “The Spider-Man 2 Venom statue was so sick. A Wolverine in that vein would have been neat. Also no special DualSense announcement yet either? Dropping the ball here for sure.”

“The decision makes no sense,” said another user. “There aren’t many other first-party games that would sell out a collector’s edition like this one.”

In recent years, PlayStation collector’s editions haven’t featured a physical copy of the game. They come with digital codes, likely because not every PS5 has a disc drive and Sony doesn’t want to exclude those players. One player speculated that physical media enthusisasts simply aren’t investing in these editions due to the lack of a disc.

“[Spider-Man 2’s collector’s edition] didn’t sell well because there was no physical disc in it thus defeating the entire point of getting it,” said one person. “Look at the new Assassin’s Creed [Black Flag Resynced] collector’s edition. It literally sold out within minutes. That’s how you do a collector’s edition.”

Of course, there’s still time for Sony to reveal a limited edition PS5 console to tie into Marvel’s Wolverine, but the high-cost of consoles these days may have presented challenges.

Still, it’s unlikely any of this will actually hurt the game as fans seem pretty enthusiastic following Marvel’s Wolverine’s recent State of Play outing. IGN also had an exclusive interview with Insomniac Games where we learned a ton of new details about the game, including whether or not Spider-Man will have any kind of cameo in the game.

Marvel’s Wolverine will release on September 15, 2026 for PS5. The game is not expected to release on PC due to PlayStation moving away from the platform.
