The ‘Classic’ nostalgia trend continues as League of Legends Classic gets a release date and the promise of player-voted patches

We know Riot Games is remaking League of Legends in 2027, but the 16-year-old MOBA is also getting a nostalgic throwback ‘Classic’ release, and now we have a release date for it.

The release date announcement arrived after weeks of leaks and teases, and it came during yesterday’s MSI Finals event, through a League of Legends Classic debut showmatch. LoL Classic will launch 29th July, and Riot is telling players to get their accounts ready beforehand by pre-downloading the game.

Specific details about League of Legends Classic are scarce, though it obviously aims to roll the game back to its initial era. But there may be differences with that early experience introduced over time, because Riot has promised patches that will be partially shaped by community votes. This could mean the game will evolve in a slightly different way to how it did the first time around.

For example, famous character builds from the olden days – like AP Yi and Stunlock Sion – return, but if the community decides balance is better for LoL Classic than pure nostalgia, the meta won’t be busted for too long. While it might be an interesting experiment to let players follow a different path, it also raises the question of whether ‘Classic’ versions of games – like World of Warcraft’s – can actually remain faithful to their original iterations over time. Evolve or not to evolve? That is the question.

It’s also another sign of a video games industry putting more and more weight on nostalgic revivals, such as remasters, remakes, or Classic versions of game experiences, in order to recapture the attention of player bases who might have wandered elsewhere. Even Black Ops 7 had to put out a ‘classic Black Ops’ game mode that’s now become a permanent addition to the game, in order to please the old guard of the Call of Duty. What’s next? Counter-Strike 1.6 getting an official re-launch?
