Game of Thrones: War for Westeros RTS delayed to 2027 to “ensure the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for”

Bad news, Game of Thrones fans – PlaySide Studios’ RTS based on the hugely successful book and TV series has been delayed to 2027.

While at first insisting that development “has been progressing well”, an update posted to the Game of Thrones: War for Westeros’ development blog later revealed the team has decided to push the game back from its original 2026 release date as it “gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for”.

In War for Westeros, you can lead House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the Night King’s Army of the Dead and fight to claim the Iron Throne. Each House features “iconic heroes who have the ability to turn the tide of battle, with the capacity to level up, unlock new abilities, and bolster their surrounding armies. Effective management of them is key to continued success in skirmishes”.

You can expect “a massive emphasis on responsiveness, unit behaviour, and physical impact”, and that the battlefield “feels visceral”, with “significant development time spent on feedback and impact for unit interactions”.

“We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans,” the update concluded, confirming War for Westeros “will now launch in early 2027”.

“This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for.

“Thank you for your patience and continued support. We know the wait has been long, and we do not take your support for granted.”

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros was announced in June 2025.
