Roblox’s string of bad luck persists as player numbers continue to plummet and the company’s stock price with it

Roblox has published earnings for its second financial quarter, revealing a significant decline almost across the board. The company’s disappointing quarter caused its stock price to drop by more than a quarter – nearly 27 percent – since the announcement on 31st July.

As reported by Morningstar, player engagement and payment were both down, too. The drop is seemingly so bad that Roblox declined to offer earnings estimates about the rest of the year ahead, while telling investors they should expect a similarly weak third quarter.

Why is this happening? Roblox blamed the lack of viral games created during these months as a key reason for the decline. But it also said players are gravitating more towards experiences with less monetisation, so those without as many microtransactions.

This is the third quarter in a row that Roblox’s daily active user number has dropped, though it remains still gargantuan – 123 million down from 152 million. The monthly unique players number was also down to 27 million, from 37 million two quarters prior.

This has had an understandably dramatic effect on Roblox share price, which has tumbled 70 percent over the last year, wiping billions off the company’s valuation. As Morningstar noted, the company thrives on continued growth, but it’s clear it can’t keep that going forever.

Roblox share price is currently hovering around $36, a far cry from the highs of $125+ a year ago. In recent years, the company has faced increasing scrutiny about its handling of the safety and privacy of its players, most of whom are children. In an effort to curb criticism, Roblox added identity and age verification through facial recognition, which has its own problems. In 2025, company CEO David Baszucki called the problem of predators in Roblox an “opportunity” in a disastrous New York Times interview.
