Halo: Campaign Evolved, the recently released Unreal Engine 5 remake of the campaign half of original Xbox killer app Halo: Combat Evolved, has sold 1.2 million copies across Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Steam, according to estimates from Alinea Analytics.
Alinea estimates revenue so far – bear in mind that Campaign Evolved has only been out for two weeks so far – stands at approximately $67 million. The firm estimates the split in purchases by platform to be about 42% on Xbox, 41% on PS5, and 17% on Steam. Alinea’s Rhys Elliott calls the sales figures “soft” so far, citing too high a price for a package lacking in competitive multiplayer, while also offering far less content than for more money than the $40 Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which PS5 owners don’t have access to but Steam users do.
Elliott offered further analysis of the PlayStation sales figures in particular, saying, “This landed with an older, nostalgia-driven crowd rather than pulling in a fresh PlayStation audience. As many have pointed out, a Master Chief Collection release on PS5, multiplayer and all, would CERTAINLY have done far better than this campaign-only remake did. At the very least, if the rumoured Halo 2 remake ships with online multiplayer, it’ll sell a great deal more, assuming it comes to PlayStation at all.”
IGN gave Halo: Campaign Evolved a 7 out of 10 in our review, citing solid execution of what was offered, but that the remake felt somewhat unnecessary.
