World of Warcraft fans are currently obsessing over colours, as dataminers pull hues from Blizzard’s website that are labelled under a curious “wow 2” tag. This, some believe, could be an indication of a major reveal at next week’s BlizzCon event.
As detailed on a World of Warcraft Classic Reddit post, dataminers delved into Blizzard’s websites CSS (cascading style sheet) where various visual assets could be found in code form. Within this code, the “wow 2” tag was found and the colour codes.
These colours, a spread of mostly blue shades accompanied by a light red, brown, and white, vary drastically from colours assigned to existing tags in World of Warcraft, World of Warcraft; Midnight (the current retail expansion), Diablo, Overwatch, and so on. As such, it appears these colours are attached to a new project at Blizzard – one that has been added to the website ahead of this weekend’s BlizzCon.
As for what this “wow 2” tag could be, the best bet is the much-speculated “World of Warcraft Camelot”, or as it’s better known, “Classic Plus”. It is widely believed this is an updated or expanded version of World of Warcraft Classic – the original version of the MMO. This is similar to how Jagex built upon the original 2007 version of RuneScape with Old School RuneScape, and to how Blizzard is now expanding Diablo 2.
While not officially confirmed as of writing, evidence of World of Warcraft’s “Classic Plus” existence has been growing over the past few months. The company teased something big was coming to World of Warcraft Classic back in January, hinting at BlizzCon being the stage for a proper reveal. Dataminers also dug up heroic and epic edition licenses for World of Warcraft Camelot in June, following the uncovering of a mysterious patch 1.6 for Classic WoW, which was present on an encrypted vendor build of the game. Blizzard also invited a selection of World of Warcraft Classic influencers to the studio for mysteriously vague reasons.
In addition, one of the biggest experiments done in World of Warcraft Classic has been the Season of Discovery. This seasonal twist was widely appreciated for its expansion of older dungeons in the game, alongside new twists on PvE and PvP, and interesting new abilities and associated quest chains.
With Blizzard announcing the schedule for BlizzCon only yesterday, one can safely assume that if there were a big reveal imminent, it will happen during the opening ceremony on Saturday 12th, and be detailed in the “World of Warcraft: What’s next” panel afterwards. Whether or not this is Classic Plus, and whether it’ll live up to lofty expectations of the WoW audience, remains to be seen.
