Rockstar Games hasn’t said much about who’s voicing the GTA 6 cast, but we now know at least one big-name actor attached to the upcoming crime epic: Stephen Root.
Internet sleuths have been scouring the web ever since the game’s very first trailer, searching for even a whiff of the possible GTA 6 cast, and a recurring fan theory is now seemingly confirmed. Asked about the fan speculation by AP News, Stephen Root said, “Yeah, you’re gonna see me in that.”
You might recognise Root’s face from his work in the Oscar-winning horror film Get Out and the Emmy-winning HBO series Barry, but his voice acting career is just as prolific. He has credits in everything from King of the Hill to Rick and Morty, and he even reprised his role as a bubble-loving yellow fish in the Finding Nemo video game.
“It’s coming out November 19th, is the latest I know of,” said Root. “But, I think, from the first roll out of GTA that they were doing maybe almost a year ago, they had my character in there and there were too many people who knew me from King of the Hill and my voice. So, I think that secret got divulged then.”
Root didn’t specify which character he’s voicing, but fans have long speculated he might be playing Brian Heder. Straight from the horse’s mouth, Rockstar’s website explains that Brian’s a “classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling” who’s “still moving product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori.” You can see Lucia and Jason going out for drinks with Brian and Lori in the GTA 6 extended look.
“I am so happy to be involved with it. It’s an amazing thing to look at,” added Root.
We’ll likely hear more about the character as GTA 6’s release date inches ever closer. For now, Rockstar’s confirmed there won’t be any generative-AI or microtransactions present in the game. GTA 6 is also running at 30 FPS at the moment, with the studio unsure about a possible 60 FPS option.
