A fond farewell to Ed Nightingale

A fond farewell to Ed Nightingale

Season’s greetings, everyone. It is my sad duty to inform you all that this week is Ed Nightingale’s last at Eurogamer.

Ed began his journey at Eurogamer back in 2021, and quickly found a home on the site as a newshound: sniffing out angles and stories that fit the homepage, the audience, and his own personal tastes. A fiend for Japanese role-playing games, Soulslikes, and all things Sonic, Ed rapidly adapted to life at Eurogamer, and rose through the ranks to become deputy news editor in record time.

But Ed’s talents go further than just finding quick-fire news stories and moving the conversation on with unique quotes: some of the site’s most notable long-reads in recent years were penned by Ed, from deep dives into the lifecycle of free-to-play games to thoughtful essays on the existential threats posed to the voice acting community in the wake of AI, Ed can turn his hand to any of the major topics that affect games, and the people that play them, in an increasingly complicated industry. It’s hard to look down Ed’s byline and choose the cream of the crop, so I’ve let recency bias do its job in this article: you ought to take a scan for yourselves, though, to see just how much of an impression Ed makes each and every day.

Ed’s passion for games and his sharp eye for industry trends will serve him well on the next leg of his journey through the industry. I already look forward to seeing how he will work with other teams to extol the merits of video games in his future roles. I know that he’ll be as successful elsewhere as he was at Eurogamer.

I have only had the pleasure of working with Ed since I joined the site in the summer, but even in these few months I can see how influential a presence he is, and how he is respected by the team – and the industry at large. I have learned a lot from his devotion to how news works at Eurogamer from his patience and razor-sharp eye (I will internalise ‘percent’ versus ‘%’ one day, I promise!), and hope that he never has to think about ‘curly quotes’ again once he files his last story.

Please join me in saying farewell and good luck to Ed, and wishing him a belter 2026 in his new role. I’ll leave you with a few words from the man himself:

Thanks for having me, Eurogamer! Working here has been a dream come true for me, after reading the site for so long. I’m really proud of the work I’ve achieved over the past four years, from meeting some of my heroes, to the longread features on big topics, to the countless stories on Elden Ring and Final Fantasy. A massive thanks to everyone I’ve worked with during my time here, for all your support, edits, and encouragement; but a special thanks to Donlan for offering me my first freelance opportunity before I joined properly, without which I probably wouldn’t have made it as far as I have. I’m looking forward to seeing what the team gets up to in future and appreciating the site once again as a fellow reader. In the words of Sonic: “I’m outta here!”
