After the success of Black Myth: Wukong and Wuchang: Fallen Feather, Swords of Legends aims to elevate the Chinese action-RPG even further

Tonight during the Summer Game Fest showcase, developer Aurogon Shanghai unveiled a brand new trailer for the upcoming action-adventure RPG Swords of Legends.

The new trailer, which is focused primarily around boss fights, shows off more gameplay for the ambitious title – which is actually the fourth game in the ‘Gujian’ series (which a freelaner I quite respect, Khee Hoon Chan, once referred to as “close to being the Final Fantasy of Chinese RPGs”).

“Set in the primordial age, a world drawn from the strange tales of classical Chinese literature, where mortals, gods, and wandering souls walk the same earth, the new Swords of Legends trailer provides a fresh look at the game’s combat, featured in a boss fight against Kong Kong Zi, Master of Cantrip, a theatrical adversary whose every move is staged as a piece of Traditional Chinese Conjuring, the centuries-old Chinese tradition of close-up stage magic,” reads a press release. “The Master of Cantrip is drawn from living traditions and grounded in a real cultural form, not invented from whole cloth.”

The trailer also detailed the Spirit Companion system, which allows players to bring a soul from the spirit realm to fight by their side, intercepting damage and joining players in linked finishers against your enemy. The first Spirit Companion you’ll meet is an ox, which looks great.

The game is single-player, large in scope and targeting a release on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. There is no date attached to the title at the time of writing, but it’s been in development for a while – and from the look of this trailer, I’d say it’s quite far along.

Following hits based on Chinese mythology like Black Myth: Wukong and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, it seems there’s a real hunger for Chinese folklore RPGs – let’s see if this one can live up to the example set by its predecessors.
