After three years of dead ends and cheeky developer comments, Diablo 4 players have finally found the cow level

After three years, multiple expansions, and constant effort from bemused bovine believers, Diablo 4 players have seemingly completed the game’s secret cow level.

The secret cow level has been an on-going presence throughout the Diablo series from the very beginning of the franchise. The original Diablo didn’t actually have one, but rumours of its existence tickled the developers enough that they decided to include a secret Moo Moo Farm level and the Cow King boss in Diablo 2. Then, in Diablo 3, there was NTCL (Not The Cow Level), a 3rd anniversary event filled with demonic cows and a Cow Queen boss.

Here’s the Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred launch trailer.Watch on YouTube

With this history in mind, players have been hunting for a cow level in Diablo 4 ever since its initial release. There were a few quests sprinkled around that hinted at the cow level’s existence, and the developers continued to tease the community about it, no actual cow level had been discovered until now. You can see the full quest in this wonderful video by LoatheBurger for a step-by-step guide on how to get there.

The quest pushes players to travel to the far corners of the game for special quest items, which must be combined with other rewards from previous hidden quests found in the original Diablo 4 release, as well as the Vessel of Hatred expansion. Placing them all in the Horodric Cube grants the Trophy of the Faithful – which finally leads you to a hidden cow island.

Then, after all that, there are even more steps required to actually access the proper cow level. Here you’ll find enemy bovines and the cow king boss, as well as a mythic crown with special affixes based on the day of the week (a little self-depricating jab at the affix system).

Here’s the rub, though: that may not even be all to Diablo 4’s cow level shenanigans. It has now been discovered that the Cow King can drop the Prime Rib, a quest item that can potentially be offered to some kind of “god”.

The years-long hunt has so far proven udderly unbelievable, yet moo knows? Maybe the hunt is still on for more meaty mysteries? Sorry, sorry, sorry.
