Amazon’s live-action God of War series has found its Freya.
Sonya Walger will have a recurring role in the upcoming series, playing the Vanir goddess. Sharing the news on her Instagram account, Walger said she is “so excited” to be playing Freya on the upcoming show’s release.
Along with God of War, Walger’s other acting credits include as Molly Cobb in the very good For All Mankind, Margot Bishop in The Catch and – perhaps most recognisably – as Penelope ‘Penny’ Widmore in Lost (no, I am still not over that phone call either).
As for her God of War character Freya, here’s the show’s official description, as shared by Variety: “A Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin’s ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title bestowed upon her on her marriage day. She is strong, insightful, and filled with regrets. When Freya’s unhappy marriage to Odin ended with her being exiled, she was cut off from her family, as well as her native land, Vanaheim. Freya has lived alone in Midgard for a century, a recluse in a hidden glade, feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods.”
Freya’s ex-husband Odin – the “most powerful” of all the Asir gods – is being played by Homeland and Princess Bride actor Mandy Patinkin. Other confirmed God of War cast members include Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Callum Vinson as Atreus, Teresa Palmer as Phoebe/Sif and Max Parker as Heimdall.
Meanwhile, behind the camera, Amazon’s God of War adaptation includes former Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ronald D. Moore, who will serve as showrunner on the upcoming series, and Emmy winning Shōgun director Frederick E.O. Toye.
We still don’t have a release window for the first season, however a second season of God of War has already been greenlit at Amazon. Earlier this year, we got our first look at Hurst and Vinson as Kratos and Atreus, in an image reminiscent of the opening of 2018’s God of War.
