As Call of Duty Black Ops 7 flounders, Battlefield 6 rubs salt in the wound by going free for a week

Battlefield 6 is now free to play up until the 2nd December via a free trial promotion for EA’s latest AAA release. This means that anyone on relevant platforms can try out 2025’s leading military FPS if they’ve not hopped in yet.

To go alongside this limited-time trial, Battlefield general manager Byron Beede stated: “We are extremely proud of what our amazing teams at Battlefield Studios have accomplished and tremendously excited about the community’s passion as we continue to build Battlefield for and with our fans. Today’s launch of a free trial for Battlefield 6 is the perfect opportunity for new players to have the All Out Warfare experience that millions of players around the world are raving about.”

This trial comes ahead of the upcoming Winter Offensive update, which is set to launch on the 9th December. This will bring a frozen variant of the Empire State map, an ice pick weapon, and a unique weather effect where players take damage if separated from a heat source for too long.

This free trial comes as Battlefield 6 settles from its ridiculous launch player count, down to a steady ongoing base above the 200,000 daily peak player mark (on Steam). Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has yet to breach the 100,000 mark on the PC platform. Now, Steam is just one piece of the pie, and Black Ops 7 is available on Game Pass which will surely attract people to the shooter. Nonetheless, Steam plus sales data paints the dynamic between the two rivals with a clear leader.

However it’s not a two horse race! It’s worth noting that Arc Raiders, an underdog release that stole the spotlight this month, is sitting pretty with a recent peak around the 330,000 player mark on Steam. This game, which remains in the zeitgeist, seems to be leading the pack between the three on Steam.

It’s an interesting time for all three games. Whether the dynamic between these big hitters stays consistent as we enter the winter holidays, or things shift up as people have more time off work and school, remains a tantalising mystery.
