Battle Arena Toshinden, the Forgotten PS1 Fighting Game Series, to Get Re-Release on Modern Consoles

PlayStation 1-era 3D fighting game series Battle Arena Toshinden is getting a long-awaited re-release. Tokyo-based publishing company Edia announced today that it will release Toshinden 1, 2 and 3 on current gen consoles in 2026-2027.

Originally released in 1995, Battle Arena Toshinden was a PS1 launch title in the U.S. and PAL regions, and the first 3D fighting game to hit Sony’s debut console. Featuring an initial roster of eight playable characters, it featured weapon-based fighting and ring-outs a year before the Soul Blade/Soul Calibur series came along and built upon these elements.

According to Edia’s press release, it plans to re-release the PS1 versions of Battle Arena Toshiden 1, 2 and 3 on current gen consoles as part of a licensing agreement with Takara Tomy to commemorate the series’ 30th anniversary.

“We will be bringing this highly-popular series… to retro game fans worldwide in the form of high-quality re-releases,” the company announced. Edia emphasized that it will utilize its experience in porting games to deliver modern console re-releases that will meet fans’ expectations.

It has yet to be revealed which platforms will get this slice of fighting game history, with Edia Corp set to make further announcements about the line-up when the details are finalized.
