The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 has been delayed, with no new release date announced by Gearbox as of writing. According to an official statement, the game needs: “additional development and polish time” to ensure Gearbox “deliver the best possible experience to our fans”.
According to the public statement, released across all official Borderlands social media channels, all digital pre-orders for Borderlands 4 have been cancelled in accordance to Nintendo policy. These cancellations will occur automatically on 26th September.
It’s worth noting that Borderlands 4 had its initial release date moved forward to an earlier date, announced by a jubilant Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford in a hastily deleted video. Since the game’s release, the game has suffered widespread performance issues for even high-end hardware.
In response, Gearbox released a Borderlands 4 PC optimisation guide to help folks out, and Mr Pitchford even took to X (formerly Twitter) to give personal suggestions to annoyed fans. Pitchford would stand by the game’s performance in the face of widespread criticism, stating it was “pretty damn optimal”, before suggesting unhappy players refund the game if they were unhappy.
Still, there is work being done to make things better. A new patch has just been released to help Borderlands 4 run better for PC players, though that does little to aid those who were eager to hop in with their Switch 2. Here’s hoping Gearbox can figure out how to get its decent sci-fi shooter working on the platform in good time.
