Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 gets sales and player boost after historic The Game Awards win

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been going from strength to strength this year. Following its release back in April, the game was met with widespread acclaim and sales to match. In May, the developer revealed it had passed a fitting milestone of 3.3m copies sold. In October, that figure was updated to over 5m copies worldwide across all formats.

But, that number has since increased further, and according to Alinea Analytics, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has sold “almost” 400k copies since its record-breaking Game Awards nominations on 17th November. Meanwhile, the company’s head of market analysis Rhys Elliott estimates Clair Obscur has “sold an extra 200k+ copies since” The Game Awards last week, where it scooped up the coveted Game of the Year accolade among others.

To break that down further, Elliott said 76 percent of those sales were on Steam, with 21 percent on PS5 and three percent on Xbox. “Around 52 thousand Xbox players” have since played Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 via Game Pass “for the first time” as well, Elliott added.

Over on SteamDB, meanwhile, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has received a notable uptake in player numbers since last week’s award show, as you can see in the graph below.

The Sunday before this year’s The Game Awards welcomed 22,759 Clair Obscur players on Steam, while the Sunday after saw 56,993 players. That’s an increase of 34,234 players between those two specific days.

The success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been publicly acknowledged once again by French President Emmanuel Macron, who said its Game of the Year win was a source of “great pride for Montpellier and for France”.

During the awards show last week, developer Sandfall Interactive announced Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s previously teased expansion was available for all players. While of course a welcome addition for the many fans out there, this expansion and its bosses have proven tricky for some.
