Eidos Montréal – the developer behind the modern Deus Ex games and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – has announced another round of layoffs affecting 124 employees, alongside the departure of studio head, David Anfossi.
The Embracer owned studio said the layoffs were made as “a result of changing project needs and impacts across production and support teams”.

“Today is a difficult day for our studio and reflects the need to adapt and concentrate efforts where Eidos-Montréal can be most effective,” the studio wrote in an update on LinkedIn.
“We are deeply grateful to the team members impacted; this decision is not a reflection of their talent, dedication, or performance. Supporting those impacted with care and respect remains our priority, while ensuring continuity for the teams moving forward.”
Addressing Anfossi’s departure specifically, Eidos Montréal added: “We thank David for his contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors”. The developer said a transition plan is “underway”, and “further updates will be shared as new leadership is finalised”. Anfossi had been at the studio for almost two decades, having joined in 2007 as a producer.
Eidos-Montréal was acquired by Embracer in 2022. The studio was reportedly set to work creating a new game in the Deus Ex series – a project that was ultimately canned amid a devastating programme of “restructuring” and cost cutting at Embracer Group which resulted in over 4500 job losses across the company.
Eidos-Montréal is not the only studio to announce layoffs in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Fortnite maker Epic Games announced it was cutting over 1,000 jobs as its flagship battle royale game experienced a “downturn” in engagement. Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics also announced layoffs in March, though assured its community Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst remain in development.
