Nintendo has confirmed the decision to halt sales of its Switch 1 console in Europe will not affect its operations in the rest of the world. The company, which recently revealed it will stop selling the original Switch console in Europe starting mid-February 2027, has clarified that it’s not ending sales everywhere else.

Nintendo told IGN in a statement that sales of the Switch console outside of Europe will be unaffected. “We plan to continue selling Nintendo Switch outside of regions where Nintendo of Europe conducts business,” the company said.

As part of the European Union’s new Right to Repair rules, manufacturers of consumer electronic devices that include batteries must offer users an easy way to access and replace their devices’ batteries.

Nintendo committed to complying with the ruling earlier this summer, confirming it’s working on new designs for Switch 2 and its accessories to allow players to replace the batteries. The new designs have since been announced, and will be rolling out at various points throughout the year and into the early parts of 2027. The hardware refresh affects the entire Switch 2 line-up, including the Joy-Con controllers, Pro Controller, as well as the N64 and GameCube controllers.

Nintendo was not willing to do the same for the older Switch 1 console, however, deciding instead to opt out of selling the console and its accessories in the Europe altogether, both across its own store as well as third-party retailers.

That decision, which was snuck into an update to the original support page’s FAQ, had some worried that Nintendo would be discontinuing the Switch 1 everywhere else, too. But that’s not the case.

The Switch 1 has been one of Nintendo’s most successful consoles globally. The console’s availability in Europe ends just before reaching its 10-year anniversary. Though it may no longer be Nintendo’s lead platform, the company actually raised the price of various original Switch models late last year, though only in the US.
