Mewgenics, the ‘XCOM with cats’ game from the creators of The Binding of Isaac and The End is Nigh, will be getting DLC down the line, but it doesn’t sound like it will be any time soon.
Mewgenics released earlier this month, and soon became quite popular. In fact, it sold 150k copies in six hours, swiftly making back its development costs. That figure has since increased, with developer Tyler Glaiel revealing Mewgenics had sold half a million units in 36 hours (in the words of Glaiel, “wtf”).
So, yes, the game is a hit, and many fans already want more. But, they will have to be patient, as according to Glaiel’s fellow creator Edmund McMillen, the duo will start work on DLC “in a few months”, and only after seeing exactly what it is fans actually like about the game.
“We have a rough idea of something small, like a few more classes and more areas etc but dont wanna start on it till we fully understand what people really like about the game,” McMillen wrote on reddit. “I assume it will take a year from when we start to release a DLC.. Maybe?”
Elsewhere on reddit, the duo was asked about the secrets they had tucked away into Mewgenics. To this, Glaiel said there are “a lot of little things” he reckons people will be still discovering for “months or years” to come. He then added this little titbit:
“But we will reserve the true ARG [Alternate Reality Game] level stuff for DLC.”
Christian Donlan has already been hands-on with Mewgenics, and all in all was quite taken with it.
“If I have one point to leave you with – other than the fact that the soundtrack is rich with brilliant original songs – it’s this: the core of Mewgenics may be simple and familiar, but the game that unfolds across all these runs is huge, and obviously so, even from my position about nine or ten hours in,” he wrote in Eurogamer’s Mewgenics Now Playing feature.
