Bungie has implemented a substantial matchmaking change which will aid those playing from “isolated geographical regions” find games faster.
Following reports of lengthy queue times from those playing in countries a fair distance from hubs like North America or Europe, a hasty update was added to streamline matchmaking for those outside of these areas.
The cause of this initial problem is one many online multiplayer games are familiar with: the cost of ensuring low-latency matches. Games tend to prioritise giving players high-quality games, and therefore matching with players a fair distance away can hinder this. An in-game message announcing the change reads; “We will continue monitoring the right balance between fast matchmaking times and low-latency matches”.
Already online, Marathon players living in these remote geographical locations are celebrating the change, and reporting initial results. One user on Reddit, Duendeacdc, wrote when asked if they were getting better matches: “I could play two rounds already .Took three and four minutes – I can deal with that! The real test would be tomorrow during the day.”
Mclovin_78 echoed the excitement: “Finally I can play again. Most North Americans and Europeans don’t understand the frustrating feeling of waiting 10 minutes to find a match only to be eliminated in the dumbest way possible and having to stare at the matchmaking screen for another 10 minutes.”
This isn’t the only quickfire change coming to the game. One of the biggest frustrations with the Cryo Archive map is being fixed, as lucrative loot vaults not always containing important subroutine itemes is being changed so they are always present. This should make the Cryo Archive and all its challenges a bit easier to accomplish.
