The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is making a big splash with a slew of announcements, all revolving around its first gameplay trailer.
Owlcat Games, the studio behind the well-received role-playing game Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, is making a big push into third-person sci-fi action with The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, which is set in the same universe as the much-loved books and show. It’s got strong Mass Effect vibes, which you can see from the trailer, below.
At the Xbox Partner Preview showcase, Owlcat said The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will get a closed beta on April 22, and Microsoft confirmed it had picked up the game as a day one launch for Game Pass. The beta will run until the game’s launch in spring 2027.
The closed beta will be available on Xbox Series X and S, PC via Steam, and PlayStation 5 to everyone who buys the Collector’s Edition or Miller’s Pack. The closed beta will give players a feel for the game’s combat, movement in the zero-g environment, and dealing with life and death on a remote space station.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a story-driven action RPG set in The Expanse universe with focus on companions, player choices, and dynamic third-person combat. As a Pinkwater Security mercenary who survives a catastrophic incident on Eros, players have to build a team to fight back against Protogen and their experiments. Though the game is set in the same universe as the books and show, it focuses on its own story and characters.
The beta will allow players to explore a remote space station belonging to their employer Pinkwater Security in the wake of escaping from the catastrophic events on Eros known from the books and TV series, Owlcat said. Along with exploring this new environment, beta players will be able to interact with its inhabitants and experiment with dialogue options and choices. Once the masterminds behind the attack on Eros catch up to them, they will also experience the combat and upgrade mechanics first hand. Owlcat said it aims to incorporate “valuable player feedback” from the beta into the final game.
“Since the beta is a work in progress, performance may vary and won’t reflect the final quality of the game,” Owlcat stressed. “On consoles, playing on Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 is recommended.” That’s a clear nod to the underpowered nature of the Xbox Series S — hopefully The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will end up running well enough on the console.
