Persona Live-Action TV Show in the Works at Netflix

A live-action Persona TV show is reportedly in development at Netflix.

The streamer has begun work on a series adaptation of Sega and Atlus’ critically acclaimed RPG franchise, according to Variety. Star Trek: Picard and 9-1-1 alum Christopher Monfette is attached to write the show while also serving as its executive producer and showrunner.

21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Robert Atwood are also attached to executive produce, as are Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson of Story Kitchen. Sega producer Toru Nakahara will also aid as an executive producer. Netflix declined Variety’s request for comment.

It’s unclear if its plot will pull directly from any particular entry or tell a new story entirely. Five mainline games, a treasure trove of spin-offs, and even a few remakes have been released since the franchise’s inception in 1996, giving the live-action Persona TV show plenty of material to pull from. The most recent numbered entry, Persona 5, introduced fans to the Phantom Thieves when it first launched in 2016 and expanded the story with Persona 5 Royal in 2024.

Although nothing story-wise is confirmed yet, fans will surely waste no time spinning theories about what elements or characters may carry over to the series adaptation. As the project is early in development, release date and casting details also have yet to be announced.

Netflix has most notably worked with 21 Laps on its sci-fi mega hit Stranger Things, which ended late last year. It was also involved in the production of other television projects like The Perfect Couple and Last Man Standing. Its movie credits include Deadpool & Wolverine (which Levy directed) and Backrooms, with future projects like Star Wars: Starfighter (which Levy is also directing) in the cards.

Story Kitchen has pursued a number of video game adaptations in the past. The company most famously backed Sega’s live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movies, but its plans for the future including projects based on Sifu, It Takes Two, Just Cause, Life is Strange, and more.

It may be some time before Netflix’s live-action Persona TV show materializes into something more. While we wait for updates, you can read about how the streaming giant is still trying to bring its Gears of War movie to life. You can also catch up on Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6, which was announced after years of anticipation at the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this month.
