Resident Evil Requiem climbs to the top of Metacritic’s all-time user scores, topping fan-favourites like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Cory in the House

Resident Evil Requiem is pretty good, or at least that’s what we thought. The game is also selling quite well, with its Steam numbers reaching a record high for the horror franchise. It now has topped Metacritic’s most popular ranked list as well.

Via VGC, we’ve learned RE Requiem, which is sitting at 88 and “generally favorable” when it comes to critic reviews, has managed to top the ‘Best Games by User Score‘ list with 9.5. It’s barely above Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which has the same user score, perhaps due to a bump in internal metrics site visitors can’t see and won’t last long… That said, Resident Evil fans shouldn’t relax, as the menace known as Cory in the House for the Nintendo DS looms near too.

In any case, it seems the game is pleasing most Resident Evil fans even after many reviews pointed out its back half perhaps relied a bit too heavily on nostalgia versus pushing things forward with courage. After RE7 and Village went to great lengths to shake the lore up and establish new characters, Requiem is an entry more concerned about legacy and the direct consequences of the Raccoon City catastrophe. It’s a compelling angle for sure, but one can see how and why some fans might be ready to move forward even if “hot uncle” Leon rocks.

A huge part of why Requiem is being widely celebrated might be that Village, as largely well received as it was, eventually crossed into territory many deemed a bit too distant from what Resident Evil was about. Those who have been around for almost as long as the franchise might also remember similar comments on RE5 and 6 back in the day, so chances are we simply are repeating a loop here. RE7’s answer to 6’s criticisms was bravely soft-rebooting the story and gameplay though.

In any case, it’s safe to say RE Requiem has been a massive win for Capcom even in its Nintendo Switch 2 version, so we’re fully expecting more legacy characters to make their return in the future based on fan reactions to the game. Let’s just hope the story embraces more of the universe’s future going forward.
