Annapurna Interactive – the publisher behind the critically acclaimed likes of Stray, Outer Wilds, and Sayonara Wild Hearts – has unveiled the latest game on its roster: “heartfelt” road trip adventure Forever Ago, which is the debut title from narrative-focused German indie studio Third Shift.
Officially described as a “third-person single-player road trip adventure telling a heartfelt story of redemption”, Forever Ago – which was revealed during Microsoft’s latest Xbox Partner Showcase – follows the journey of protagonist Alfred as he travels north following a personal tragedy.
“Along the way,” Annapurna explains in its announcement, “Alfred will explore beautiful environments and meet fascinating new people.” His journey will take him from serene forest trails to deserts and mountains, where he’ll examine objects “to help him understand his surroundings and the people who came before.” Key to all this is his instant camera, which players will use to document his trip and solve “small environmental puzzles” along the way.
Forever Ago features an original soundtrack by Slay the Spire composer Clark Aboud, and is set to launch this autumn on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and PC (via Steam, Xbox, and Epic).
Annapurna’s release roster has been steadily swelling again following a mass exodus of staff in 2023 amid a dispute with the company’s owner. The publisher’s 2026 slate also includes the fashion photography espionage of Snap & Grab, “gentle” puzzler D-topia, musical turn-based RPG People of Note, action-adventure Demi and the Fractured Dream, plus the eagerly anticipated Mixtape. It also has Stories Untold studio Screenburn’s intriguing Silent Hill: Townfall (which recently got its first proper reveal) on the way too.
