At this evening’s Xbox Presents, which was dedicated entirely to Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s Stranger Than Heaven, we finally learned when the anticipated action-RPG will launch. At the end of a 30-minute presentation diving into the game’s story, combat systems, and characters, the developers revealed the title will be launching ‘this winter’.
Yes, it’s not a proper date, but I imagine RGG and Sega – like every other developer and publisher out there – is running scared of GTA 6, which is currently scheduled to release on 19th November, 2026. But who knows? Maybe Rockstar will push the game back, again, and carve another massive hole in the middle of the game industry release calendar as a result. Stranger things have happened!

Stranger Than Heaven is the latest title from the studio behind the Like a Dragon, Yakuza, and Judgement games, and the upcoming game takes a lot from RGG’s back catalogue, as you’d probably expect. It’s cinematic, there’s a massive focus on action, and there’s a core theme of friendship running throughout the game’s expansive setting. Where previous RGG titles have mostly called one location home and had you briefly venture to other areas, this one is a bit different: Stranger Than Heaven will take place across five different eras and five different cities in Japan, beginning in 1915 and then checking in with our heroes in 1929, 1943, 1951 and, finally,1965.
Elsewhere, I’ve written about the game’s combat – a distinct step-up from what we’ve seen in past Yakuza games, for example, and a bit of a gamble on RGG’s part: can something that seems this complicated from the outside end up feeling intuitive and fun in your hands? The studio has a good history with making action and cinema feel like two parts of the same helix, so I’m confident. But I’ll reserve my judgement until I can actually try out the bold new system for myself.
Stranger Than Heaven comes to Xbox Series X/S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, Xbox Game Pass, Steam and PlayStation 5 this winter.
