The Rock Losing Fortnite Story Vote, as Fans Back Rival

The Rock is currently losing Fortnite’s new season vote that asks players to pick a side between his in-game character and a wintry villain.

It’s a situation that caught the eyes of Fortnite fans this weekend after the discovery of a hidden in-game multiplier that appeared to be weighted towards The Rock’s chances — even though he was still bringing up the rear.

The Rock’s long-awaited return to Fortnite as the voice and likeness of fan-favorite in-game character The Foundation had been heralded by various trailers and teases, and in Fortnite lore he remains one of its most popular characters. So it’s therefore been a surprise to see him currently lagging behind his new rival, The Ice King.

When first logging into the new season of Fortnite, players are given the option to back either The Foundation or The Ice King, with their in-game points then added to a global total for the team captain of their choosing. It’s currently unclear how the winner of this ultimate showdown will be reflected in Fortnite’s storyline, though all players will get a unique variant of either The Foundation or Ice King’s skin depending on who comes out on top.

Throughout the season, points accumulated by players backing The Foundation and The Ice King filter into two separate progress tracks, and determine when new weaponry and other gameplay items themed around each character are added to the battle royale’s loot pool.

And, as noted, The Ice King now has an early lead — despite that hidden modifier that fans spotted. Fortnite developer Epic Games subsequently acknowledged the multiplier (which gave The Rock’s character a 1.226% points bonus) had been active and said it had “reverted” the value back to “default.”

Since then, though, the developer has held “Seven Sunday” — an in-game event where the bonus was reapplied — to more officially give The Foundation a chance at a catchup. To keep things fair, this week will also host “Frosty Friday” — a similar event for The Ice King.

Fortnite fans have been closely tracking the gap between the two characters. On Sunday morning, Ice King was at 18% completion while The Foundation lagged behind at 14.17%, according to trusted dataminer FireMonkey. Over the course of yesterday, during the now-officially boosted Seven Sunday, The Foundation narrowed that gap from 3.83% down to just 1.15% — but still couldn’t overtake The Ice King. Fans now expect The Ice King to pull away further through the week, before his own boost this Friday.

Of course, this is just all in-game fun, and the majority of fans are treating it as such. If The Rock does end up losing, it will not be the end of the world — though many fans have highlighted his current losing streak as unusual, especially in light of the long-stranding rumors that The Rock demands a “no-lose” clause for fight scenes in his movie contracts (something the actor has never confirmed or denied himself.)

After years of Fortnite narrative feeling like an afterthought, it is very cool to have such a prominent in-game rivalry (and the return of various popular characters) placed in the foreground. Social media is full of army recruitment-style posters from fans of each character calling their fellow players into battle, and encouraging support for their chosen team. And even in Fortnite lore (*pushes glasses up nose*) The Ice King has previously been shown as something of an antihero, with his own motives, rather than an actual villain. Will The Rock actually be seen to lose a battle? His destiny is in your hands.
