Yakuza studio’s new RPG, Stranger than Heaven, will span five distinct time periods and five Japanese cities

At this evening’s Xbox Partner Preview, we got a fresh look at Ryu Ga Gotoku’s Stranger Than Heaven, as well as news that a dedicated broadcast will air this May.

Before I get into that future event, I will tell you more about what was shown this evening. First off all, the RGG team revealed that Stranger than Heaven will in fact take place over five different eras across five different cities in Japan. So, we will be spending time in 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951 and 1965.

While the team isn’t going to give too much away about Stranger than Heaven right now, RGG executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama told Xbox Wire: “As you can imagine, five cities and five eras is a massive undertaking. We’re putting a tremendous amount of care into bringing to life these times and places we feel are rarely explored in games. It’s truly a unique experience you can’t get anywhere else.”

Along with this journey through the ages, today’s Stranger than Heaven teaser – which you can check out further below – also gave us a look at the combat systems, which includes a range of weapons to smash down on your adversaries, as well as grappling, the always exciting one-versus-many fights, and environmental interactions all given their moment in the spotlight. “This is an all-new level of combat design from us, and what you saw is just the tip of the iceberg with much more to be revealed soon,” said Yokoyama-san.

As for any familiar faces you may think you see in the new Stranger than Heaven trailer, well here is what Yokoyama-san has to say about them: “We weren’t exactly subtle with some of the footage we chose for this trailer, but let’s just say that players can look forward to an all-star cast.”
