The Call of Duty movie gets a release date, but can it continue the trend of popular video game adaptations?

A Call of Duty movie is set to release on the 30th June,2028. Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan and Battleship’s Pete Berg will be writing and directing the flick, respectively.

Announced during a CinemaCon presentation yesterday, head of Activision and producer on the film Rob Kostich said: “I told everyone we were only going to make a movie if it’s right. In David Ellison, we found that partnership […] We want to make sure that the authenticity of it is captured on a human level so that it feels really real and infuses that with epic scope.”

This marks the latest in a series of big video game movie adaptations that Hollywood is embracing as of late. The Super Mario Galaxy movie quickly became the highest grossing film in 2026, beating out Project Hail Mary despite poor critical reception.

Obviously, a Call of Duty movie would likely target an older audience than Nintendo adaptations, but lest we forget the Street Fighter movie is also nearing its 16th October release date. Then of course there are previous examples of big-budget movie adaptions, such as the Uncharted movie which starred Tom Holland.

Video game adaptations are also taking the world of television by storm. Fallout of course is the most recent example of a popular gaming universe landing to much acclaim on Amazon with 83 million people watching season two during its first week. The Last of Us has also done exceptionally well, currently casting actors for its third season.

Whether this Call of Duty movie can bring in a similar level of excitement from movie crowds as previous big hits remains to be seen. Who knows? Maybe it’ll ramp up the seemingly ravenous hoovering of film rights for more beloved games. Where’s my Blinx the Time Cat movie? C’mon Paramount!
