Roguelite sensation Ball x Pit made quite the splash in 2025, and the first of several planned free updates arrived in January. Three months later, we’re looking at an even bigger one that could pack more than a few surprises…
At least that’s what game maker Kenny Sun has promised in the official PlayStation Blog as part of The Shadow Update’s announcement: “Time starts to bend in this update, with some new ball evolutions that freeze it and warp it entirely.” The new beefy patch, set to drop on 27th April, is adding new characters, balls, passives, and even an extra building. The two new characters are The Tunneller, a scrappy miner “whose shots wrap around the screen and come back in from the other side” and The Tiptoer, “a fragile but deadly ninja who stays undetected by enemies at close range” at the cost of less health and damage.
The meta-shaking 11 new balls (with some being kept a secret for now) do the following:
- Venom stacks up and slows targets while chipping away at them until they’re paralysed.
- Time drops a timesnare that freezes enemies caught in its range.
- Erosion cuts straight through foes, “with each hit shaving off a percentage of their current health.”
- Time Bomb plants “an explosive that goes off after a short wait.”
- Timestop freezes absolutely everything on the field for a few seconds.
- Warp blinks to a random spot on the field “upon every enemy hit while ramping up speed as it goes.”
- Sniper shots cut straight through enemies, rewarding “precise enemy line ups” and critical builds.
- Heart Swallower “gives each hit a certain chance to drain a bit of life and heal you for one while also weakening the target’s attack by a percentage.”
The four new passives are Full Metal Rapier (each ball scales its damage based on how many baby balls and enemies are currently on the field), Arrow of Fate (adds immunity to incoming projectiles and fires back a burst of baby balls when being hit), Argent Stopwatch (plays with momentum, boosting balls before they bounce), and Sword Breaker (lowers base damage to 75% while quietly stacking an extra 1% for every enemy in play). If the new balls feel game-shaking, the passives are certainly on the safer side and answer the demands for more control over builds beyond ball synergies.
Finally, the Guildhall building “will allow players to re-roll previously chosen character upgrades”, which kinda feels like something that should’ve been in the game from the beginning when you think about it.
Eurogamer’s review of Ball x Pit called it “the best kind of intricate, daydreaming fun” despite some grind that some players might find annoying. Are you planning to jump back in for this update?
