Resident Evil Requiem’s New Mode Only Unlocked After You Beat the Game

The new mode coming to Resident Evil Requiem next month will require you have completed the main game in order to access it.

So, if you’re yet to finish Leon S. Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft’s adventures in Raccoon City, now is the time to do so, according to Requiem’s development team.

“It’s a mini-game, and it’s based on the battles in the main game,” director Koshi Nakanishi said in an interview with Japanese site Denfaminicogamer (via machine translation). “For those who have cleared the main story and are thinking, ‘I still haven’t had enough fun!’, I think you’ll be able to enjoy this and go ‘Whoa!!’, so sharpen your hatchet and wait.”

“This mini-game is content that is unlocked after clearing the main story,” added producer Masato Kumazawa. “So, if you’re planning to play it, clearing the main story during [upcoming Japanese holiday] Golden Week would be just right for you to be able to play it.”

Fans believe this new mode will likely be Requiem’s version of the series usual Mercenaries offering, which typically offers wave-based action in familiar areas and the chance to play as other characters. Indeed, Resident Evil veterans are hoping to finally see Sherry join the action, or potentially play as Requiem baddie Zeno.

Beyond this, Requiem will get a meatier addition in the form of proper story DLC at some point in the future, though Nakanishi confirmed this was still some way off. Whether this will answer the mystery of Leon’s new piece of jewellery, however, remains to be seen. Asked about Leon’s relationship status, Nakanishi said that more would likely be revealed — someday. “But,” the director concluded, “that ‘someday’ isn’t now.”

Capcom recently confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem had sold a stunning 7 million copies, enough that it has raised its profit forecast for the year. Not played it yet? There’s still time before the new mode arrives to get the game finished. “Resident Evil Requiem successfully splices two separate strains of survival horror together into the one highly infectious new mutation,” IGN wrote, awarding the game 9/10 in our Resident Evil Requiem review.
