Nintendo surprise dropped Super Mario Galaxy 2 update with new story content

Over a decade after its original release, Nintendo has casually added a new bit of lore to Super Mario Galaxy 2.

As part of an update for the Switch port of Super Mario Galaxy 2, Nintendo added a brand new chapter to Rosalina’s storybook quite out of the blue. The Epilogue – as this chapter is known – can be read once the Final Chapter is available in the story book. All you have to do is clear any of the game’s galaxies and earn yourself a power star.

As for what this new chapter in Super Mario Galaxy 2 is about, I will go into more detail below the video, so if you would rather discover it for yourself, please head elsewhere now.

Super Mario Galaxy 2’s new Epilogue chapter sees storybook Rosalina heading to the garden alone, when she spots two lights chasing each other through the sky. These lights become a pair of suns, bathing the area in light. After this happens, Rosalina is seen speaking to a young girl, whose identity is not confirmed in the chapter.

Many have hypothesised that the young girl Rosalina speaks to in the garden is Princess Peach, and this new chapter is a nod to events that happen in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (no spoilers, but if you want to know more, I covered it in an earlier story you can read here). Others, meanwhile, are convinced this child is a younger version of Rosalina herself. “The strongest force in the galaxy is a heart that never gives up,” Rosalina says to the mysterious young girl before the chapter’s close. It is really rather heartwarming.

As for the wider world of Rosalina and co., we awarded The Super Mario Galaxy Movie two stars on its release earlier this month, with Christian Donlan calling it “quite bad, for quite interesting reasons”.

“This isn’t a Bowser movie, just as it isn’t really a Mario movie or a Luigi movie or a Rosalina movie or any of that jazz. There isn’t enough space and time for anything truly memorable to develop,” he wrote in Eurogamer’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie review.

The film will reportedly be available to purchase digitally from Tuesday, 5th May.
