Steam Controller “ran out faster than we anticipated”, says Valve as it pledges more stock

A certain controller was released earlier this week, and within what felt like no time at all, it was totally out of stock. Yes, I am talking about the Steam Controller. It was there, and then just like that, it was gone, having been snapped up by eager patrons faster than you can say full steam ahead.

Valve has now released a statement on social media, admitting that the initial interest in its controller was greater than the team expected. Thankfully, though, it will be getting more stock in for those that missed out on this first batch of Steam Controllers.

“Steam Controller ran out faster than we anticipated, and we hate that not everyone who wanted one was able to get it,” Valve wrote on social media platform X last night. “We’re working on getting more in stock and will have an update on expected timeline soon.”

We will of course let you know that timeline as soon as we hear more.

Valve’s controller is an alternative to other gamepads, and has been designed to work across the Steam ecosystem. It was marketed for £85 here in the UK, though soon after Valve ran out of stock, the controller was popping up on resale sites like eBay with a significant mark up on price.

The Steam Controller was initially announced last year alongside the Steam Machine, Valve’s upcoming console/PC hybrid which will be able to run PC games on a television or as a normal gaming computer. We still don’t have a price for the Steam Machine, though Valve previously said it will be more in line with the current PC market. Earlier this year, the console’s release was delayed due to RAM shortages.
