The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition continues to cause headaches as Obsidian somehow botches free upgrade deployment on consoles

The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition isn’t a new release; it launched back in early 2023 with plenty of problems. Somehow, it’s now giving players a headache more than three years later, after Obsidian Entertainment promised a free upgrade path that hasn’t panned out.

As explained by Kotaku, the now-fixed current-gen version of the RPG became relevant once again as Obsidian announced the original version would be delisted on 27th May, with players only getting the Spacer’s Choice Edition from that point onwards. In fact, a free upgrade path was offered to everyone who owned the base version of the game on all platforms. Very nice, especially since it was a paid one originally. But somehow, there’s been issues with the upgrade path on both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

On paper, the free The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition offer would apply to all players who owned the game digitally on any platform, with the upgrade process never explicitly confirmed for people owning The Outer Worlds’ physical PS4 and Xbox One release. After the announcement, many players finally went ahead and grabbed the game’s vanilla version. On 28th May, Obsidian admitted it’d made some mistakes along the way “due to how entitlements work on the consoles”, meaning PS4 and Xbox One version owners also need the expansion pass, which effectively removes the “free” part from the equation.

The company is seemingly offering alternative workarounds to anyone affected though: “If you purchased the base game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 between 4/30 and 5/27, or have any issues with the upgrade, please contact our support team and we’ll work with you to make it right. Sorry again for the frustration around this.”

Meanwhile, comments on X aren’t pretty, with most users either confused by the wording and muddled process or downright mad about the situation. “Simply put: scam,” one player wrote before going off after losing fans’ goodwill. “It’s absolutely hilarious how this shit tends to happen most to games that are fiercely critical of capitalism,” another one added. Even some people on PC are reporting issues with the upgrade on GOG, though it seems Steam players had no such troubles.
